⛰ Book Wrap-up

This book incites the events that happened in Donald Miller’s life when he had to confront that his life was boring as a story. This realization made him embark on a journey where he learns what makes a good story, thus turning his life into a good story.

🥰 Should you read A million miles in a thousand years?

A beautifully written book.

A good recommendation to all.

If you think you are always caught up in the moment, never really thinking too much about what is happening in your life. Then chances are when you look back at life, you won’t see any memorable moments that you can cherish that leave a smile on your face. If you can relate to what I’m saying, then you should read this book. This is the price you have to pay if you live too busy and consumed in life, you deprive yourself of any chance to have any memories when you look down at your life.

I guess it all comes down to how much control do you have in your life? How much of a good story are you living?

If you want to lead a life with a good story, then you should check out this book.

🧠 Thoughts on A million miles in a thousand years

The idea presented in this book is about thinking of your life as a story.

If you are dissatisfied with your life when you look at it, the book offers a framework of thinking that helps you optimize your life into making it more interesting.

I agree that the above line sounds a bit ruthless. Just bluntly saying that you are living a boring life and this book will help you make your life more interesting can be self-deprecating and far-fetched at the same time. But I guess what this book is trying to do here is to make us get out of that comfort zone you been sitting all along fooling yourself with various excuses.

When you look at it, trying to make a good story out of your life can unarguably lead to do a more interesting and challenging life. If you orchestrate your life to build a good story, then you can lead a more fulfilling life.

What this book comprises is the lesson Donald Miller learned while trying to build a good story out of his life. Mind you, that these lessons are not a ground-breaking but simple and subtle realization that we easily miss seeing.

👍 What did I like About It

What I loved most about this book is its writing. Donald Miller is a wonderful writer, and this one is just beautiful. Loved the tone and his details.

That made me kept hooked on this book. I have to admit that I enjoyed the writing even more so than the lesson he learned.

This book is not about deep intellectual revelation, but about simple life lessons. That made this book an easy read for me.

👎 What I Didn’t Like About It

Mind you, that there aren’t any major flaws with this book, I’m just nit-picking here.

I don’t think stories are a good source of reference to guide your life.

Stories require a lot of dramatized elements, conflicts, and sacrifices.

If you lead a simple happy life, that doesn’t account for a wonderful story. You will need to have an inciting incident and a rising action following a good climax to account for a good story. Good stories require challenges, obstacles, and a happy ending.

If you can see through all that and realize that the aim is growth. All these are ways to make you stretch your comfort zone, so don’t bother too much about making sure that the story is gripping enough.

It will feel depressing when you realize that your life is boring. Let me console you in advance and say don’t worry. Don’t focus on whether your life is boring, just focus on whether you can make your story any better.

One other point I would like to add is don’t push away simple happy moments that will come in our way for some extraordinary event to make a grand story, enjoy it too. Understand that there is value in those simple moments as well.

💝Favorite Quotes

“A good storyteller doesn’t just tell a better story, though. He invites other people into the story with him, giving them a better story too.”

“If you aren’t telling a good story, nobody thinks you died too soon; they just think you died.”

🔍 Do I recommend it?

Yes, I recommend this one.

Not too intellectual, not too pointless, enough to make it enjoyable.
